2014 Sea Kayak Guide Positions

Discovery Sea Kayaks is now hiring for Sea Kayak Guides for the 2014 season.  We have limited openings and looking for individuals with the appropriate blend of kayak skills, people skills and natural history knowledge.  If you are a fist time kayaker this is not the position for you, contact us about our internship program.

Who We Are:

Discovery Sea Kayaks is the premier sea kayak tour company on San Juan Island dedicated to providing travelers and guest from all over the world a first class kayak tour experience.  We operate small groups to ensure safety, ease of communication while on the water and so each guest is attended to with a personal touch.

Tours We Offer:

A range of tours are offered at Discovery.  Half Day Kayak Tours, Day and Sunset Kayak Tours that depart daily.  We also run multi day kayak adventures ranging from 2 days to 5 days.

Guide quality is a huge part of the success of any tour company and we recognize this at Discovery.  So having guides well trained in kayaking, the Discovery system and local natural history is a major part of the early season.  You can expect wet days on the water training.

Who We Are Looking For:

We will only hire those with the basic foundations in sea kayaking, above beginner level experience in the outdoors and a strong desire to enter the outdoor industry.  If you are asking yourself what the basic foundations of kayaking are, this position is not for you.

It is a must to be able to work hard for consecutive days.  Guides are required to be in good physical condition and be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds to chest level. We generally operate with a small staff so work is plentiful for all guides.

Being well organized and on time is a must.  We have little room in our schedule for being late or forgetting gear.  As management we realize that you might have a day where things are not running smoothly.  But we will not tolerate consistent behavior that has a negative affect on business or other staff members.

Being part of the team is a requirement that I can not stress enough.  From cleaning gear and stowing away properly, to helping out when requested.  The structure really works best when we all operate on the same page with the same expectation.

Kayak skills that will be expected as a guide will be defined further along in the interview process.

What Now?

Put together a resume and include what you wish.  Remember we are hiring you to be an outdoor professional so do not leave out anything relevant work in the outdoors.
