Bioluminescence is the emittance of light by a living organism. Here in the San Juan Islands, one such organism makes a grand impression during the summer months. With longer warmer days, Noctiluca blooms en masse in the waters surrounding the San Juans and puts on a spectacular light show for those seeking to adventure out onto the water at night. One of the best ways to see and interact with the magic is from the seat of a kayak. The sparkles and flashes are best viewed during the darker moon phases, which are the only days we schedule this tour.
