The weather has been warm and nice. The town has finally caught stride and is busy with people and tours are running multiple times a day. We have been seeing whales on our Day and Sunset Tours. Half Day Tours are seeing seals and seal pups. Lots of Eagles on all the tours. This is a great time to be on island. I will post new pictures soon.

Recent Adventures
Well we have been busy with running tours and getting Kyle and Meaghan trained for the season and we have completed the training for 2008 and I am most happy with the new guides. Kyle and I recently went out on a 3 Day Kayak Adventure and then I went out with Meaghan for another 3 Day Kayak Adventure. Kyle has just left to lead his first 5 Day Kayak Adventure. I just wanted to post a few photos from the trips.
Welcoming 2 New Guides
We added two new guides to the 2008 season. Kyle Miller who was here last year from Oregon for a brief internship and returned this year and is leading trips and doing great. Meaghan Barone joined us after completing her education in Expeditionary Studies and she is from New York State. We are very happy to have both of them on staff this year as they are amazing kayakers and have gained great knowledge of the local area and wildlife.
So we give a warm welcome to Meaghan and Kyle.

West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium
I know it is a ways out yet but this event should not be missed. More kayaks than you could ever imagine will be on the beach for demos. There is also a retail section set up with vendors from all over with kayak and other kayak related gear for sale. Not to mention all the lectures and skills classes you can enroll in. So I am putting this notice out there now for everyone to put it on their calendars. You can get more details on the WCSKS Site.
Hope to see you guys there.

APRIL SNOW
Well the past few day have been crazy here with the weather. Snow fell on the islands this weekend but we were still on the water running kayak tours. Ivan Reiff Captain and Owner of Western Prince was out on the water looking for wildlife and the rare chance to run a tour in the snow. They had some luck and found an Orca Whale (T14) roaming about.

Though our kayakers did not get to see any whales on their trip, they had a special day of kayaking in the snow.
So things are looking busy for the rest of the week here. We have tours on the books but still have some space to add more. Plus the weekend is coming up and who knows what the weather may bring or what wildlife will be around, but we will be ready to run San Juan Sea Kayaking Tours! Just give us a call or email!

What time of year we run kayak tours.
I just wanted to post an update on the times of year that Discovery Sea Kayaks runs kayak tours. There seems to be a good number of people looking for kayak tours during what we call the shoulder season and off season. Shoulder season is spring and fall and off season being all winter. Discovery Sea Kayaks offers kayaking tour opportunities all year. We understand that our weather can be very nice in the winter and with all the wintering birds, there is a lot to see. Day Kayak Tours and Half Day Kayak Tours are the most popular during the Should and Off Seasons.
I wanted to make this update because we have been getting a lot of phone calls from people who thought there were no kayaking tours going out.
So please call us and book a San Juan Island Sea Kayak Tour. 360.378.2559

Weekend Forecast Is Looking Good
Well for those in the area and looking for something to do, the weekend forecast is looking great for kayaking!
Not much news to report on. I just wanted to put up a couple of pictures for kayak class last night. We had a great time climbing around on the kayaks and working on some hip snaps. Everyone was looking good and had a great time.
Getting read for their first wet exits.

Good job getting up there. Hard work but good to know how to do.
Hard at work getting the body mechanics down.
Just wanted to say good job to everyone and thanks for coming out.
Sea Kayak Tours in the San Juan Islands should be great this weekend. Warm temperatures and Sunny skies are in the forecast for and chances for wildlife viewing are good.

San Juan Kayaking Fun.
Well I know the forecast was calling for rain, but we had a nice weekend here in Friday Harbor. We have two kayak trips out today and yesterday we were busy with kayak classes at the pool. So the season is here for kayaking and this is a great time to get up here before the summer.
There have been Orca Whales spotted in the area over the past few days. Resident J-pod swam past the Lime Kiln Lighthouse on the west side of San Juan just the other day. Transient Orca Whales have also been moving about the area. Western Prince Whale and Wildlife Tours just started running their boat last week and have been seeing lots of nice wildlife.
Saturday was Sea Kayak Class I day at the gym. It was a lot of fun and we had a full first session and our second session we only had one person. Which was great. Were were able to get a lot done with the one on one instruction.
Working on Hip Snaps using the side of the pool

Demonstrating Hip Sanps on the side of the pool to get everyone started working on the exercise.
We had a great time in the pool. Learning some of the foundations such as wet exiting and generally getting used to crawling around on you kayak is pretty comical for everyone. Many laughs shared but a lot has been learned. I look forward to Sea Kayak Class II with this group.
Check out our Lessons Page to get more info on kayak lesson in the pool.
