Jason Gunter

A true American adventurer

Co-owner of Discovery and founder of our multiday and guide training programs, Jason is a superb paddler, gourmet wilderness cook, research naturalist, and published wildlife photographer. He has extensive outdoor experience including biking, caving, mountaineering, and whitewater and sea kayaking.

Jason completed his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Arkansas. He now lives full time on San Juan Island where he has been leading overnight kayak tours throughout the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands for over 15 years.

Jason is passionate about training new guides and helping them develop into safe, skilled paddlers. He also enjoys leading kayak tours and sharing his knowledge of the island’s natural history and associated environmental policy.

First Aid and CPR certified, and trained under the BCU (British Canoe Union) kayaking education system, Jason is responsible for the high standards we hold all of our kayak guides to. While he still spends ample time on the water, you may also find him at our downtown office where he works at his other passion, bikes. Jason has spent the past several winters seeking out up-and-coming mountain biking and cycling destinations. Bringing this interest back to San Juan Island, he has enjoyed developing a successful bike rental component of Discovery Sea Kayaks.

Jason’s motto

“A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own, and no obstacle should be placed in their path; let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sunburnt, stranded, drowned, eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches-that is the right and privilege of any free American.”
