Our Three Day San Juan Island Kayak Tour is perfect for those wanting to spend some extra time exploring the San Juan Islands. This is our most popular multi-day kayaking tour. Three days offers the perfect amount of time to explore various islands and spend time in prime whale watching territory. We design each route to travel along important orca whale feeding areas and maximize our time in some of the most stunning regions of the islands.
Each evening we will have the opportunity to either view amazing sunsets from camp or hike to one of the most unbelievable viewpoints for sunset. After sunset, if the conditions are right, guides will provide the opportunity to do a night paddle in search of bioluminescent plankton.
WILL I SEE WHALES?
The magic question we get every season. The San Juan Islands are well known for the chance to see orcas in the wild and we do kayak with the whales every season. The best months for orca encounters are June, July, and August. Our shoulder season months, April through May and September through October are still great months to kayak with only a slightly less chance of seeing whales. But yes, we do see whales frequently during the high seasons.
The San Juan Islands are a very small area and the regions we paddle are the same areas as the other companies located on San Juan Island. Therefore, all companies have the same potential to encounter orca whales. We highly recommend selecting a company based on other criteria such as group size, equipment provided and dedication to your kayak experience.
One the many reasons to choose our multi-day kayak adventures is the food. Guides develop custom menus for each kayak tour. Once you reserve a kayak tour with us we will send you a Food Profile form to complete. With this information, we will create the perfect meal plan. We utilize as many local ingredients as possible when preparing meals. If we are unable to harvest what we need from our organic garden we will shop at our local farmers market to find quality produce. Our staff will prepare each meal, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The campsites we utilized on the three-day kayak tour are all typically equipped with water, picnic tables, pit toilets, comfortable flat ground for pitching tents, and a variety of trails to explore. All of the island campsites are maintained by Washington State Parks. Camps do NOT have showers or electricity.
Each island we camp has its own charm and character. Jones Island offers some of the most beautiful campsites with amazing sunsets and great hiking. Stuart Island has tucked away campsites protected in a deep bay that provide great opportunities to see feeding Osprey as harbor seals patrol the area searching for fish. Enjoy a hike through the countryside to one of the best sunset spots in the San Juan Islands.
Discovery kayak guides are highly skilled kayakers with strong naturalist and history backgrounds. Not only are kayak guides skilled on the water, they take care of you at camp. Guides prepare all meals in the field using fresh ingredients. No dehydrated dinners on our tours. Enjoy your guide’s culinary creations and signature dishes. Breakfast always starts with freshly brewed coffee and followed by the proper fuel to get your day started. Mid day Lunch will be prepared beach-side. Lunch break is a great time to stretch your legs, use the restroom and sit back to take in the island beauty. Dinners are always a highlight of the day. Relax as your guides put together a wonderful meal paired with a little wine to end the day.

Early Season: Spring weather on San Juan is typically cool with day temperatures ranging from the low 50’s F to the mid 60’s F. Expect partly cloudy skies with light breezes to windy conditions. Chance of precipitation is greater in the Spring season but rain is usually light. Weather conditions can change rapidly and we keep all reserved guests up to date on the latest forecast.
Summer Season: San Juan Island can have some of the most pleasant summer weather. With half the annual rainfall of the Seattle area, San Juan is typically dry all summer. Temperatures range from upper 60’s F to the mid 80’s F. Skies are usually blue and clear, great for evening star gazing. Winds are more predictable during the summer, light most days with calm seas. There are occasional offshore systems that push strong winds trough the islands.
Late Season: Fall can be one of the best times to visit San Juan. The days become cooler, ranging from the low 50’s F to the mid 60’s F. Winds can be light to moderate depending on the current weather systems. Early fall is typically dry with light rain developing around late October. This is one of our favorite times of the year.
Properly packing for your multi-day kayak adventure can make a difference in your comfort level. When selecting items to pack try to avoid overly bulky items. Think in terms of layers that you can easily interchange to be comfortable. We recommend avoiding any cotton clothing and think of pack wool or synthetic garments. Wool will help maintain warmth even if wet and synthetic garments are quick drying. Examples of synthetic clothing are fleece and polypropylene.
