What sets Discovery's Bioluminescence Kayak Tour apart?
We plan each departure around the lunar cycle with a small percentage of moonlight to ensure the best viewing experience possible. On nights when the moon is larger and brighter, the moonlight reflecting off the surface of the water impacts viewing. Our staff of guides provide a wealth of knowledge on what you are seeing and a few good stories along the way. All guests receive waterproof pants and jackets to help with the chill of the night.

Paddling the west side of San Juan Island provides everything you want in a sea kayak tour. Adventure is key and adventure is what the outer coast of San Juan is all about. With the highest whale and wildlife sightings of any other kayak route on the island, it is where you want to be. Combine that with rocky shores, steep bluffs, bountiful kelp beds, and views of the Olympic Mountains. You can see why we love this paddling route.
Why are Half Day Tours more popular than Full Day Tours?
At the end of the day the Half Day Tour is just a bit shorter and fits the majority of folk’s schedules. The launch locations and routes are the same. So you will have a wonderful on either tour. However, if you want just a bit more time along the west side of the San Juan, the Full Day Tour is the choice. With the extra time, we stop for lunch and a short walk to the lighthouse.
Can beginners join a sea kayak tour? Are tours family friendly?
Our kayak tours are designed for the average person. Does it take some effort and work? Sure it does, but all good things require a bit of effort. Each day is a bit different with tidal currents and winds changing the challenge daily. But our kayak guides are there with you each step of the way ensuring everything is safe and tidy.
For families with kids younger than 12, we offer tours along the east side of San Juan from Griffin Bay and our private docks in the Port of Friday Harbor. These protected areas offer a family-friendly adventure that your kids will love.
